ABOUT US
History Of The Orchestra The Orchestra was established in 1983 and run on an informal basis until 1986 when a group of parents became involved in raising funds to support the Orchestra.   The Orchestra operates as a partnership between Musical Directors and Parents for the purpose of furthering the musical talents of young people between the ages of 7 and 18 attending schools and colleges within Surrey Heath and the surrounding areas. In January 2004 we entered into partnership with Surrey Arts Northwest to further the performing arts within Surrey. This agreement strengthened the Orchestra in many ways, including providing and maintaining a continuity in standard of Musical Directors and Tutors. There are 3 sections of the Orchestra, the Senior Section, the Intermediate Section and the Junior Section. Current orchestra membership totals 130+. Membership of each orchestra section will be determined by the Musical Directors based on the need to achieve overall instrumental balance.

Seniors

This section takes members through to the time they leave to move on to further education and work. It is usual for members to be promoted to this section from the Intermediate Section. However, in certain circumstances and via audition, members may be recruited directly into the Senior Section. Performance standard here is at least grade 5+. The senior section is led by 2 Musical Directors, Mark Cardy and Paul Harris and supported by a percussion tutor

Intermediates

This continues our training forum but prospective members, through audition, may be accepted directly into this section. Age has no real bearing on the selection process; the selection to this section is purely by musical ability and experience of playing within an orchestral environment. Performance standard is grade 3+. The Intermediate Section is led by a musical director and is supported by two music tutors,

Juniors

This is our early training ground with members starting as young as 7 years old. There is no requirement for this section to have passed any musical assessment or grade, although members will need to have started music lessons and be working towards grade 1. This section is led by a musical director and supported by music tutors Helen Owlett, Rory Meades & Jackie Hoare (woodwind), Gill Underwood (brass) & Rod Oughton & James Dearling (percussion). The Orchestra also operates a tutor programme for those wishing to learn a woodwind or brass instrument. Tuition is under the guidance of Andrew Thomas (woodwind)  and Philip Thompson (brass). The Orchestra holds ‘Open Mornings’ for prospective members throughout the year. Dates for these are published on this web site in advance of the selected dates. This is an opportunity for those interested in joining an orchestra to come along, bringing their instrument and joining in.
